About the site

Everyone wants to be sure that offenders are punished and don't offend again.

But criminal justice is complicated - and often misunderstood. How people are punished and pay back for their crimes is a complex and emotive issue.

We've brought together some of the key facts and real stories about different aspects of criminal justice; including sentencing and sentences, restorative justice, prison and probation.

The Government has outlined its proposals for how to better ensure offenders pay for their crimes and, just as importantly, don't go on to commit any more in their response to the 'Breaking the Cycle: Effective punishment, rehabilitation and sentencing of offenders' consultation. You can read the response on this website, and share your thoughts.

We hope this information will help you make sense of criminal justice, and answer any questions you may have.
